I have a friend (sort of sounds like i'm talking about myself to a psychiatrist), who has a bowling style with high speed, and low track. He has been bowling for a long time, and is 42 years old. At one time, almost 5-10 years ago, he was one of the better bowlers in our city, but it appears that his style and arsenal are a bit behind the times. He is very tall and very large and easily manhadles the ball.
He still uses a Columbia Rock that he scuffs up before bowling each night, even on our fairly dry shot. Because his ball speed is so high, he is really a straight down and in type, who has a fairly large arc to the pocket. His ball does not skid snap since he appears to power it through the breakpoint, but rather appears to hook very early and continuously. He does have a fairly good rpm rate from what I can see with my naked eye, and would imagine that his Axis of Rotation, is greater than 45 and less than 90.
Anyway, given this limited information, what type of ball drilling would you recommend for this type of bowler? It appears to me that you would want something aggressive (high flare), and something that would get the ball into an early roll. Any suggestions? Pin location from PAP would be nice, as well as pin above or below fingers. Pin in or Pin out ball? etc ..
Also, I would like to hear any suggestions about balls that might fit into his style. At one time I talked him into buying a Colossus Supreme, but it basically goes straight for him, even with scuffing. It's hard to believe his Columbia Rock hooks, whereas the Colossus Supreme doesn't, but it is true. His Colossus is drilled stacked leverage. I would recommend a WMB, but he is probably soured on MoRich right now, even though I have had good success with MoRich equipment.
I would assume all polished and pearlized balls are probably out of the question, and he should just resort to something dull. I imagine he would do better with a low RG ball as well, is that correct? Are there any other parameters that he should be looking at, when shopping for a ball? He uses 16 lbs, should he consider dropping the ball weight for some non-obvious reason?
Any help is welcome,
