Spans and pitches

Postby Sweetroll » Thu Mar 16, 2006 9:40 pm

I use a 4" from hole cut to hole cut span using grips and thumb sleve. My thumb pitches are 1/8 back and 1/8 under the plam. I was thinking plugging a few balls and trying a zero back and in another ball 1/8" forward any thoughts?

Per Bill Taylor, for a 4" span he recommends 1/8 forward. I believe he is talking about total span, not cut to cut. For every 1/8th your span increases, your thumb pitch adjusts by 1/16th, so if your total span is 4 1/4, your thumb pitch should be 0. His thumb exceptions are if you have a very dry or short thumb you should add 1/8th forward. If you have a very damp or long thumb you should add 1/8th reverse.

These are good starting points and then determine what is best for you. Take care....JS

Over the years the hand is not what it used to be......

4 5/8 even

3/4 away on the ring and 1" on the middle. (Arthur has been visiting me for quite a few years). Pretty much straight up on the fingers (1/4 - 1/4).

Works for me......

I am 4-3/4 cut to cut and 3/8's forward with my thumb, I shortend up my spam when I first went with a little forward from 5/16 reverse and it fealt OK. Once you get used to not squeezing the thumb it is easy, I always liked a tight thumb and this just adds to a relaxed feel.

Drillmn300,

You have made a good change in your grip. I have done the same thing in my grip as I was also a large reverse pitch for the thumb for nearly 15 years of bowling.

Tadah!! The change to forward pitch has allowed me a better roll on the ball and more relaxed grip. I now use a pitch on the thumb of 5/16" forward w/1/16" towards palm. The span is 4-1/4 middle and 4-3/8" ring.

I wish that I had made this change when I first started bowling.

Bill
