you can get more revs with your pinky tucked, but you can also do some damage to you hand and wrist. A good number of people that I know who've tucked their pinky have had trouble with it eventually.

Very true. Basically if you feel stress or tension it's probably not for you and an injury in the making (either quickly or over time).

Al Stewart singer song writer has a line in one of his songs that rings true many times: "Nothing that's forced can ever be right, if it doesn't come naturally leave it"
"Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people."

it works for me

I have found that I do get more revs when I tuck my pinky in and for my delivery style (slow) it gives me considerably more, however this has lately been my last adjustment If I find that it is working for this particular lane/line and approach I put a coat of "new skin" on so I don't get a blister.

The driller has something to do with it

Postby Jim H » Tue Aug 09, 2005 9:30 am

If the ball driller did not know that the small finger was turned at the time the ball was drilled then the fact that you tuck the small finger under will increase the pressure on the ring finger. That additional pressure is what caused the extra revs. It is similar to increasing the span for the ring finger. However it has been said by a few people that this might cause some discomfort or pain over a long period of time.

There is the possibility that the driller will drill the ring finger span a little shorter in order to allow for you to tuck the small finger under. This will reduce the possibility of discomfort or pain but it will also reduce the extra revs.

Work it out with your ball driller. Between the two of you you should be able to get the correct span that will increase the revs and reduce the discomfort.

Remember the ball driller is there to help you, and the more the driller knows about you the better the opportunity to get a good result.

One other thing that I would like to add, that is kind of implied by some of the answers to your question, is that some people have more range of motion (or flexibility) in their ring finger with their pinky tucked.

If you hold you bowling hand out palm up, and hold your pinky and your index finger straight out (with your other hand), see how far you can curl your middle finger and ring finger towards your palm. For me, if I hold my pinky straight with my other hand, I can touch my middle finger to the palm of my hand, but on the same note, I can only curl my ring finger about half way. If I repeat this test with my pinky tucked, I can easily touch the palm of my hand with both fingers.

Pinky Tuck Leads to Increasing Axis Tilt

Postby Joseph_Slowinski » Fri Oct 20, 2006 4:07 am

Axis tilt will be increased more than rev rate with the pinky. This is why you have more backend reaction. Tilt is the amount that your PAP is up in the vertical axis. Literally, it is measured as the amount of spin. When you tuck your pinky you will increase axis tilt at the point if release. In addition, cocking and cupping the wrist also will increase the axis tilt. Consequently, you will increase both the amount of skid and backend reaction with each of these three. The pinky tuck will cause a small increase in both skid and backend reaction while cocking and cupping your wrist will lead to a great deal more skid and backend reaction. Experiment with each indivdually and then stack them: cup and cocking; cup and pinky tuck; cocking and cup; cup, cocking and pinky tuck. This is literally seven different ball reactions with these three changes. Specifically, watch the ball reaction difference with each of these seven combinations. You will be surprized at how this will provide you with so many fine tuning possibilities.

P.S. Cupping the ball will create more revs as well. And, tucking the pinky will increase the axis of rotation as well.

Very interesting...... Back in the urethane days on the patterns
of 40+ flat we would tuck the pinky to get more of an inverterd
track for heavier roll.

Have not really done research with all the high end balls of today.......

Still on my 7p shots today w/plastic tucking my pinky I hit the
middle hole......

It would be interesting to see if future articles in our great BTM
magazine just might address this issue......

Thanks - Lee
