Left vs. right handed ball & drilling

Postby sbracer » Sat Jul 02, 2005 9:05 am

I am a lefty and I just got a new ball. Compaired to my old ball it seems to be right handed by looking at the thumb hole placement. To me, it seems natural to have the thumb hole on the right side (below) the two finger holes for a lefty (about 5 O'clock), and opposite side for righty, (about 7 O'Clock), just as you look down at the ball with the two finger holes in a lateral line to yourself. Just holding your hand in front of your face shows this. My new ball has the thumb hole on the lower left of both finger holes. It is a bit of a backward stretch to reach it and it is a bit tiring after a few games. Am I thinking correctly on this? The Pro Shop assures me it is correct.

Thanks,
-Eric

does not sound right. they probably made a mistake and
do not want to own up to it. unless you have a thumb that
is way out of line or extremely flexible like soft rubber this
does not appear to be the correct fitting for you.

time for a new ball driller. take the ball elsewhere and
get another opinion both pro and con.

Your grip is definitly wrong if you feel a stretch and your hand gets tired with more games. As far as the right hander vs. left hander, yes the ring finger span is generally more than the middle finger for most bowlers, which is how one can generally tell if a ball is a leftys or rightys w/o looking at drill layout.

General idea, but not a rule of thumb. (If I remember right) 70% of bowlers have ring finger span longer, 20% have middle finger longer, and about 10% are equal. (Don't quote me on this as I can't find the source for this anywhere that I looked, and can have a figure mixed up)
