Sport patterns can be very challenging, due to the extra oil toward the outside of the lane and the smaller margin for error. Shorter oil can be especially challenging for bowlers who are used to having plenty of oil in the middle of the lane.

When faced with shorter oil, here are a few tips to help control your ball reaction and stay in the pocket:

  • Use more forward roll so the ball reacts less violently to the back end.
  • Target a breakpoint that is closer to the gutter and not as far downlane.
  • Bowl with smoother reacting balls like urethane or lower-flaring reactives.
