Speed-dominant players are often told to slow down. Bowlers looking to move inside and shape the ball more also need to reduce their ball speed when needed. Here are a few tips to help you do just that:

  • Shift your weight in your stance: Leaning back and putting more weight on your heels will help to slow your feet down and slow the tempo of your approach, reducing your ball speed.
  • Move up on the approach: With less room to “run,” you’ll take smaller, slower steps toward the foul line, helping to bring down your ball speed.
  • Reduce the height of your swing: High backswings usually create higher ball speeds. Work on lowering your swing to reduce your overall speed. Note that this tends to be a permanent change and often works in conjunction with a timing adjustment.
