The physical game itself originates with the stance, and it can either set you up for success or create problems that have to be compensated for throughout the approach. Keep these tips in mind to make your stance an effective part of your physical game:

  • Ensure that your feet, hips, and shoulders are aligned with your intended ball path.
  • Your forward lean will influence your ball speed. Lean back if you want to slow down; lean forward to throw the ball faster.
  • Ensure that your ball is in a position for a straight ball path, which will look different depending on your body type. As a rule of thumb, you want the ball in line with or just outside of your hip, but not outside of your shoulder.

Evaluate your stance periodically, either with video or with the help of your coach, and adjust it as needed to make sure your approach is working for you, and not against you.
