The crossover step is the first step with your ball-side foot. It should be relatively short and placed directly in front of your non-ball side foot. It is either the first step in a four-step approach or the second step in a five-step approach. For the purpose of this tip, we’ll discuss this drill using a four-step approach.

Taking only one step, start without a ball to establish the direction and distance. Then step back into your start position. After a few repetitions, add the ball to synchronize with your ball start.

A handy visual reference would be to place painter’s tape on either side of your non-ball side foot to create a guide for your foot placement, but be sure to ask permission to place it on the approach and ensure that no residue is left behind to endanger other bowlers.
